To get the most out of coaching, there needs to be a good fit with the coach. It's a working relationship, so trust and a sense of ease and understanding are key to its success.

How it all works

Initial discussion

Whether a private or corporate client, the process will usually start with an initial, no obligation discussion about:

  • what you are looking for out of coaching (your overall goal);

  • what coaching is (and is not) in a bit more detail;

  • any questions that you have; and

  • how I may be able to work with you.

How we proceed

Once you have decided you would like to work with me, I will ask you to enter into a short coaching agreement.

Generally speaking, when coaching individuals, it is best to commit to a specific number of sessions at the outset (often 3 to 6, depending upon your preference and upon the nature of the coaching you are seeking).  The sessions are then spread out over a number of weeks or months to allow you (or whoever is being coached) sufficient time to take any actions that have been identified and to make progress between sessions.

Where and when

Coaching can take place either:

  • face to face or in an office or suitable public space (including out in the open, if appropriate arrangements can be agreed – some people find that conversation flows more easily and coaching can therefore be more productive whilst out walking, and I am happy to explore this with you); or

  • remotely, over the telephone or by FaceTime, Teams or Zoom – fortunately, gone are the days when geography dictates who can coach you!

The sessions

Each coaching session tends to last between 45 minutes and an hour, although there can be some flexibility with this. I manage sessions to ensure that you (or the person being coached, if a colleague or member of your team or organisation) get as much value from them as possible and leave them each time with clarity as to the steps that you will be taking before the next session.

The next session will then generally start with a review of the previous session and of the progress that you have since made, before a (new) goal for that specific session is discussed and identified. That goal may be a standalone one or, more often than not, may be designed to move you one step closer to achieving your overall goal. The choice and agenda remain yours.
